SHIFTA

An act of domestic terrorism during a cultural parade in downtown D.C. inflicts multiple casualties including the life of a young Congressman and law enforcement agencies are quick to conclude it was carried out by a mentally ill lone wolf manipulated by a chatbot.

Executive protection specialist Yemi Uzunma survives the attack and suspects it may be connected to an online prediction market widely thought to have been shut down called the Bazaar. He launches his own investigation into a mysterious, ideologically motivated assassination broker not only for the safety of his CEO sister’s clientele at Raptor Security but also for the preservation of order in a region facing a sudden spike in violence directed toward the power elite who call it home.

REVIEWS
(from BAZAAR)

“I kept thinking about how easily our current society could slip into a similar scenario. Joyner delivered an outstanding piece of work, and I would say it’s a must-read, even if it’s outside your usual preferences!”
-A Pocketful of Reviews

“What signals high-quality writing is Joyner’s awareness of how to maintain frenetic action, while also engaging timely themes. The dark web, cryptocurrency, and 3D-printed guns are not just thrilling props, but shades of the real world in our uncertain, digital milieu.”
-@dewscribes

“I know that the digital world is vast and has its fair share of dark, shadowy corners, so it’s not a stretch to imagine that something like the Bazaar does exist. That alone is enough to give anyone the shivers, and it’s certainly something that I’m left pondering well after turning the last page.”
-Meigan, @dreaminginpages

“The novel asks uncomfortable questions about the logical endpoint of our increasing reliance on digital platforms to mediate human interactions—even deadly ones.”
